HomeTourism Tatul the Thracian sanctuary

The Megalith monument Tatul stands by the village of Tatul, about 35 km southeast of Kurdjali town.

It is believed that this was the place where sacrifices to the Sun God were made due to the orientation of the stones, which point towards the sun at equinox.

Thats why the monument is called the Bulgarian Stonehenge.

The most interesting site in the region is the Thracian sanctuary, dedicated to Orpheus.

In a huge rock the following are carved: two tombs, 8 stairs and a niche to place a ritual plate.

It is believed that the sanctuary dates from around XII c. BC.
